Information Technology

information technologyIT departments continue to struggle to deliver projects on time and within budget. To stay competitive, companies must remain more agile and organized. Businesses are tasked to do more with less. More so, managing projects has become harder and harder within a complex technological environment with limited resources. To overcome these challenges, many organizations turn to project management offices (PMOs) as a way to boost project efficiency, cut costs and improve on project delivery.

Genome's project management and reporting process

Genome International Corporation (GIC) deploys a proprietary process, GVIP (Genome's Value Improvement Program) to ensure continuous improvement and optimization in performance of its resources working in Bioinformatics and other software projects.

Scope and goals

The primary value additions GVIP is designed to accomplish for our project stakeholders are Continuous monitoring of compliance to various coding standards, reporting process, development process, naming conventions, library structures and all other project deliverables (hereinafter referred to as CI, configurable items)

  • Detection and mitigations of any deviations within reporting intervals
  • Minimize bugs in coding and documentation by multiple internal and external reviews
  • Early detection of design and architecture errors by domain and functional reviews
  • Additional external assistance in lifecycle phases including Integration, cutover, pilot and data migration of CIs
  • Value-adding project metrics to monitor cost, quality and time of projects
  • Utilization of knowledge pool to assist stakeholders make decisions in selection of tools, databases, products etc. by using the contemporary market knowledge and expertise
  • Project risk management, mainly related to human resource

Depending on the type of project engagement, CIs and specific domains, a combination of the above would be applied.

The scope of GVIP is limited to external, balanced review of ongoing software projects. GVIP is not designed for active management of actual projects, which is the responsibility of respective project managers.

Salient features of GVIP

  • Provides an independent and balanced external review of software projects
  • Provides a flexible process and documentation tool to maintain project risk registers and industry/domain best practices
  • Integrates seamlessly with current PMI recommended project management methodologies including PRINCE2
  • Works with Waterfall, Sprial, Agile, Iterative, Extreme programming, SSADM, DSDM and test-driven project methodologies
  • Includes Six Sigma, CMM, ISO 9000 and ASQ based Quality Assurance practices during weekly conferences

How does GVIP work

The diagram explains the reporting structure of GVIP

The main components in GVIP are

Genome Program Managers The program managers of GVIP are qualified and experienced process and program managers with more that 15 year of experience in IT program management, PMO and I.T. Quality assurance.

GIC assigns one program manager for each 20-30 Programmer Analysts (PA) it employs. This resource interacts with the PAs on a regular basis by means of emails and video conferences. During these interactions, the PA's status reports are reviewed and the areas addressed by the Scope and Goals above are discussed, and the findings and minutes are logged.

Project Managers. These resources are the actual project execution managers, of both our Bioinformatics and business IT projects at client sites. Depending on the agreed reporting (optionally agreed as indicated by dotted arrow connectors), the findings and suggestions from PA status reports are communicated by Program Managers or PAs to Project Managers.

Programmer Analysts (PA). These are actual project resources that perform PA duties in the project including, but not limited to software design, data modeling, functional configuration, development, data & server management, testing and operational support of software applications.

Resource pool (RP). These are experienced resources, sourced mostly from current PAs, identified and grouped based on tools, technology and business domain expertise, such as banking, financial services, mortgage, supply chain, retail, manufacturing etc. Members of the RP participate either in live teleconferences between Program Managers and PAs or review the findings and minutes and provide their feedback with suggestions.

PMO and Methodology Consulting Service

information technologyEnterprise PMO

To gain a strategic position, Enterprise Project Management Office (PMO) is used to ensure that projects are prioritized by their alignment to the objectives of the organization. This further helps in maintaining project management as an organizational strategy. Genome’s PMO and methodology consulting service aligns with both the PMO and the departmental project management initiatives.

Capability

It is extremely important to deliver on projects consistently and produce quality deliverables with lesser resources. A streamlined process can ensure deliverables and improve predictability. It can increase an organization’s capability to take on more and bigger projects, and successfully deliver on them. A process framework can cater to a variety of projects including type, size, technology, complexity, budget and delivery model.

Framework

Genome has developed a methodology framework by combining all the applicable processes and its experience with the project delivery. Framework includes a set of processes arranged in a definite sequence. It recommends on expected output or deliverables from various processes. Proven templates support all the deliverables that can be used as a reference and are modified based on project needs. The framework uses overall project management as prescribed by PMI and then fits various software development methodologies and best practices - prescribed by CMM and SEI - into the overall solution delivery process.

Type of Projects

Genome’s methodology framework can be applied to projects of all types including Application Implementation, Application Development, Application Enhancement and Infrastructure Projects.

Genome’s methodology framework - key features:

  • Scalable to any size and type of project
  • Overall solution delivery approach and not just software development
  • Elaborate processes on Communication, Risk Management, Requirements Management and Change Management
  • Elaborate governance model
  • Processes supported by industry-proven templates as a reference model
  • Incorporates best practices from PMI, SEI and CMM
  • Process implementation oriented towards achieving capability and excellence
  • Processes to report health of projects to all the layers of management up to the executive suit

Application Development and Implementation Services

Software development projects transform a set of specific customer needs, expectations and constraints into a new software application. These projects include prioritizing requirements, design, coding and deploying at a customer site.

Projects that procure software can be used or configured based on the user requirements. Often, off-the-shelf packages that closely match requirements are implemented as a standard solution. Other organizations choose to select a packaged solution and customize it.

Methodology

Genome application development and implementation services use a set of standard practices recognized by the software industry. It also combines best practices recommended by organizations such as CMM, ISO and SE.
